As I've been thinking more and more about this, I think a business model that might be interesting to try to keep both the openness and accessibility while making it viable might be to require licensing above a certain level? Number of people / commercial applications, any else?
I think Unreal Engine perhaps is the best example of this? It seems like they're doing fine with it.
I don't know enough about them to know But I have no idea how this could apply to libraries, like pandas or matplotlib They're used by millions, yet IFRC they're not doing so well. But it don't really see pip install telling you to out your PayPal credentials to do the install :/
