The problem of duplication could also be solved by paid, commonly used software. I'm not saying you're wrong but I'm saying there's multiple paths to the same desired outcome here.
I guess I think of open source as an API for technology companies to collaborate in a way that involves minimal lawyers, contracts, and red tape. It's super hard to start a formal partnership, but it's easy to push to a shared GitHub. IMO this is the tech industry's secret weapon
