That's a great way to think about it! Has the hardware reached the point where a $1k headset will stay useful for a few years?
I'm using my original Vive from 2016 to play Half Life Alyx and it's a blast. It still holds up well (though it doesn't have all the bells and whistles that the current headsets have like finger tracking). So yes I'd say so.
