Yep, democracy works as intended. People decide and decide badly, mainly because they vote for representatives like them, not better. The next step in democracy can only be to add in the Constitution the protection of the long-term good of citizens. Difficult but not impossible.
Right now that's sounding an awful lot like when people say "this is good for Bitcoin!" when literally anything happens good or bad. But I hope you're right!

Correct, maybe it should be formalized better than just saying "long term good". Maybe some kind of good backed by universally accepted scientific facts? No more climate deniers, anti-vaxers, flat-earthers. At least they couldn't vote for someone who openly supports this shit.
