If we keep prioritizing money and greed over everything else, propping up absurd authoritarian regimes like this in the process, we're probably not going to be free to have these beautiful choices in the future. This isn't cool.https://twitter.com/stegersaurus/status/1233200333112758272 …

Another way to look at it is to say that the company is helping the people of China get access to stock photography according to the law there. People must want it. I also don’t see the logic in criticizing one company when trade with China (I+E) = 5% of US GDP.

Man dude that's a slippery slope. Just because it's "the law" doesn't mean it's right. And they can make their own service if they want stock photography + censorship. Not impossible- they have the resources. 5%? Doesn't matter- take a principled stand.

Jason, pushing the argument further... are you saying you never buy anything that’s made in China (or similar regimes)? As an individual do you believe you’re able to investigate the entire supply chain of the products you use to ensure nothing is coming from China?

He didn't say that. Perhaps you mean that you think his logic implies that somehow? If so, perhaps you can clarify how that works?

He certainly didn’t say it.. I was pushing his “principled stand against propping authoritarian regimes” sentiment to understand how or where one would draw the line on what sustains these regimes. As an individual I’ve struggled to find the right answer.

1/ In a sense, pointing out that the supply chain and general cause/effect is super complicated to trace is a "gotcha" in that nobody can offer a satisfying 100% answer to it. Because it's complicated. The show "The Good Place" has an entire plot dedicated to this concept.

2/ That being said, there's a way to be pragmatic about it and not get lost in indecisiveness. And that is to, at the very least, make a distinction between a complicated chain of events, and -directly facilitating a bad thing-. That's what Shutterstock is doing here.

4/ They're helping to legitimatize the worst aspects of the regime. Not every dealing with China involves this kind of evil. You can do business doing something good, and therefore push things in the right direction. Like an uncensored search engine.

Thank you! This is helpful. My approach is that different people draw their lines at different places, and as a society we collectively land someplace.. always a tussle between where we land and where we should land... with nuance of who is the we and who decides the should.
