      To me, mathematical notation can be viewed as "bad code". Single letter variable names that are often re-purposed and change meaning.       Exactly. That’s a part of a fairly fundamental theorem of functional analysis. Almost every proof of any significant theorem would be hopelessly unreadable if we insisted on programming conventions.

      Intuitively that doesn't seem to square with experience but I can't honestly come up with a segment of code yet as a counterpoint. So for now I'll take your word on that...

          Code notation has evolved to excel at things like "backpropagate this error on this matrix object" and programmers forget they have internalized a lot about said object. But for describing a domain the way Emily just did? Only a few obscure environments work that way.
