3/ So basically what I'm most concerned about here is that by poorly communicating the math, you're not only hampering understanding even smart and math literate people. You're also shooting yourself in the foot with increased potential for mistakes.

Hear hear! But, that's the case with (almost) everything. "George don't! Just go there" and "George don't just go there!" can create misunderstanding too.

But it doesn't have to be that way though! There's better practices with language of course, even within the framework of an arguably horrendously designed one (English). Same with PHP lol. Same goes for mathematical notation- easily abused and usually is. Doesn't have to be.
