To me, mathematical notation can be viewed as "bad code". Single letter variable names that are often re-purposed and change meaning. Overly obscured meaning and of course no comments even when they'd help :P . So this is a great step to helping readers like me.https://twitter.com/jeremyphoward/status/1233011836057870338 …

In our book we always show code equivalents for any math notation. So often, the Python & @PyTorch code is clearer and simpler. And you can actually execute it and try it! For instance, LogSumExp: pic.twitter.com/MfuDaMMcGl

I’ve personally noticed some papers also have math that doesn’t line up with their code on GitHub. Putting the two next to each other makes it easier to make sure you put good work out into the world IMO

That's quite problematic honestly. I do think obscured mathematical notation is unnecessarily prone to lead to mistakes like that in the exact same way that you would have mistakes with bad code itself.

It's a good format to describe things precisely and succinctly. Drawback is it's hard to unpack without guidance. But who the hell writes math notation without describing it carefully, and why is that EVERYONE??

My first commercial project was making the Mac version of the language R. It was written by mathematicians. Imagine a sea of code of single and double letter variable names. First thing I did was to re-factor for more readable variables.

That's always my first instinct when I see that problem! Makes such a difference.

For sure, mathematical notation can be obfuscating; and, I'd suggest, often deliberately so. Too many people wrongly believe that hard-to-follow maths makes them look clever. Plenty of such papers have errors or omissions in their maths, tho', which rather gives the lie to that!

Those two issues are # 1 and 2 on my basic paper submission checklist. So common as a reviewer, and as you mention, a mess to try to figure out later as a reader.https://amytabb.com/ts/2019_05_09/

This is great! I hope these practices get commonly adopted.

I understand mathematical notation, but have no idea what the code equivalent means (I know it means the same, but if you put it separately I have no idea what it means).

It's an interesting reversal - I know all of the symbols in the math notation, but I'd need an hour with pen and paper to understand it. I don't know exactly what the code does, but I can read it and could look up the docs. Probably five min to get my head around it.
