I dont think you need to justify your go to market strategy. Either customers will buy it or they wont. People who comment you should do a) b) or c) are not the ones on the hook. Eisenhowers quote comes to mind- farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil...
I think it's worth getting feedback on and engaging the community with it. It has served me well to always assume I'm probably wrong in research and I think the same holds true in other complex decisions such as this.

This is a fair statement. Just to cut to the chase- imo - open source is a non-starter because you have said you dont have the financial resources to sit and wait for some commercial oppy to magicerialize.
