I think you have the right idea. That’s why I choose to work for myself. So I can make my own decisions about the work I want to do and how I spend my days. If you get too big you can end up doing work you don’t love and just managing other people.

I'm not surprised people are trying to convince you otherwise. Our society promises success (e.g. start-up with exponential growth) -> happiness, no matter at what personal cost. Challenging this concept creates cognitive dissonance which is inherently painful.
