We're doing this for ourselves. We're ok if it doesn't last 5-10 years. Seriously.
Besides, when it comes to greater good, a focus on rapid growth over fundamentals has been a net negative for society IMO. Sustainable growth <> no growth.
And in the case of startups, the investor perspective is opposite to inventors. Investor is fine with 99 failures & 1 big success. This investor bias doesn't help the other individual 99s. (I'm reminded of the ways ergodicity assumption can be misapplied wrt EV)
