For deoldify, I think to a large extent, the research is the product. I don't see another competitive moat there, at least yet. So giving away the research seems like a dangerous step.

There are many reasons a company open sources some of its software. In your case, it seems you can't articulate the reason. But let me give you one good reason. It's a trojan horse. You want other businesses to integrate your software which gives you an upsell opportunity.

There's an easy to articulate set of reasons for us to open source what we did and this was a very deliberate decision: Reputation and invaluable feedback. Worst case scenario? Business fails and we still have the strong prospect of finding jobs in the field.
