Another way to look at it: Are you sure you'd be as well-known as you are now if you hadn't made the original DeOldify model open source? How many other closed-source models have brought fame and fortune to their creators? (I'm genuinely interested in answers to this.)
But really let's just be fair here: We did release a whole bunch of open source. That's really the point. It's just that we're not releasing the coolest of them all yet. Yet! So think of it as a time based release.
It’s not that hard, folks: selling one version pays for future research.
It will all boil down to packaging to address the Job to be Done (JTBD). Open source relates to shared development costs. A lot of products use open source. But products are able to sell because they solve a specific use case with as little friction as possible.
There are many use cases for colorization. But, MyHeritage is a clear JTBD for people interested in their family history and have a lot of old bw pictures. This is the sensible route to market for specialized DL technology.
Maybe I missed that part but the result differences myheritage<->open source are not just a matter of training? Just wondering if it is worth to juggle with the colab version, when the myheritage version spits out far better results.I´d rather give you the money directly though.
There's a lot of architectural differences, training differences etc. Almost everything changed.
I think the way youve done it is completely reasonable. I think the art of it is figuring out how to share the technology while not sabotaging the product and I think you've hit the right balance
