1/ I think it's time to address a question/criticism I've been getting quite a bit which was fully expected when going into making DeOldify into a business: Why not be awesome and give out the latest and greatest DeOldify for free? For the greater good?
ID's stuff wasn't always open source. Unreal engine is a great and notable exception but notably they can send an army of lawyers if things don't go right (we don't have that kind of money). PhysX was originally for selling special hardware if I remember correctly...

Wasn't Unreal more closed initially? IIRC only AAA studios had access at first, and then relaxed a bit but with quite onerous terms before the present day free threshold? And like you say, id engines were only released long after the commercial success of the games.

You are correct on this. It was only like 5 years ago that Unreal opened their engine like that. I know because I was making VR experiments using it back then :)
