I really read this more as a cautionary anecdote of a pretty general trend. It's not like I think I have the answers, but it seems like we could do better if we had a lot more public funding going into research at the very least.

Somebody pointed out, rightfully so, that a lot of what seems to be going on at OpenAI as described in the article isn't uncommon in research generally.
