Somebody just posted this on Reddit. It really demonstrates how well the new DeOldify model on http://myheritage.com/incolor  can handle difficult scenes like crowds. It's not perfect of course...a tad too purple. But this is progress!pic.twitter.com/gtDVJErCpL

Is the DeOldofy model updating/learning as it goes? Just curious if some of the photos where there’s some incorrect color on the skin tones if it will be fixed later if I try coloring them again.

It doesn't learn on the fly like that- that would be cool though! But the model will get updated as we improve it through training outside of the site. In fact that's one of the things I'm working on currently.

Jason, I spent a few hours on Sunday colorizing family photos. I'm so impressed with the tool! I wondered if it would be possible to build in a 'hint' feature, where a user can specify a spot colour to help clarify grass from sand or the colours in a flag?

I have very little familiarity with how the current model works and was trained, but my initial thought was to pass in a second "hue hint" img independent of the b&w img. You could train the model by randomly selecting areas in the hue hint layer set to the hue of the true img

That's a direction I've though of and I think that makes the most sense. The chief difficulty in this would be to make sure that segmentation is done reliably to properly indicate what should get colored and by how much. This is assuming you're talking about automated data gen.

Suppose the model knew one true pixel color (blue) of the image, and it currently colors the surrounding area red. Could it learn based off the hint pixel to change the neighboring red pixels? Just curious, don't know if it would work in practice
