#DeOldify by @citnaj will evolve into a powerful test of general intelligence, maybe a better one than text-generation. Below is a photo from my family album, colorized by @Deep__AI's free deoldify ( https://deepai.org/machine-learning-model/colorizer … ) But something is amiss here. Do you see it? You probably did well (but you also knew my name, unfair :). Still, from the clothes and optical imperfections you can guess the era (1950s). From the faces (a vague mix of European and Asian), and the roofs -> Russia (Tatarstan). Therefore, all flags should be bright red!

But the model doesn't know that! And we can see the same limitations here, in spirit, that GPT-2 demonstrated with language. Both models can do correlations, like coloring a single flag, or a well-known situation. It is "aware" of Soviets. But it cannot connect the dots.pic.twitter.com/zEfom2M871

What would it take for it to connect the dots? (Another photo from my archive that no model have seen before). Recognize tokens (a portrait of a tyrant), and objects (flags) - jump to an easy conclusion. But it's a great test, as color photos with Stalin almost don't exist.pic.twitter.com/zQ9uUkoGnJ

Or look at this one. A model that can recognize characters (Cyrillic! Must be Soviet), or read Russian (Glory to Soviet Builders), AND access to texts (Soviet banners are always red) would have colored banners red. A picture-only model cannot do it. A test for _Understanding_!pic.twitter.com/YdmlQSRFJN

Maybe some supervised fine tuning? Flags are great because there’re mostly context-free. The best training data for a flag... is the flag itself.

Agreed. But at the same time it would be really nice to have some contextual reasoning!

Yep, if I were to vote, I'd prefer not to introduce fine-tuning at this level. It makes such a perfect test case!! I'm not even sure what would make a better test! To color a flag, an AI would have have to play GeoGuessr (guess a location from cues), except also in time!

Like, you could get pictures of roads, and see whether the AI would color the dividing line yellow or not :) Or make it color military uniforms. But I feel, nothing beats the flags! For tricolors especially. Can it tell Ireland from Italy, or Hungary from the Netherlands? :)

That's exactly what I was thinking about with the flags.
