It is for a while until it isn't. Been there, done that. It's called burn out, and it happens whether or not you love what you're doing. Take care of yourself guys. Over-intellectualizing about this subject doesn't change the research and evidence around this.https://twitter.com/jasoncrawford/status/1210608133091069952 …

It's a strange tweet, as nobody said that it's bad to work hard. I think that guy is clumsily trying to find a reason why he's special, and maybe purposefully missing the point about "working hard != jeopardizing your health". He's welcome to try out the Japanese system

where people die from overwork all the time and productivity is lower than countries with work life balance. Working yourself to death isn't productive, it turns out. It's also not fun, unsurprisingly.

Do you have any insights as to what drives that over there? It's pretty astonishing from a distance.

It's a mix of traditions gone awry and social pressure. On one hand, caring about your company is equated to putting work before all other needs. On the other hand, you're not *expected* to care about anything else if you're a man.

You're not supposed to take any household responsibilities except bringing money home. What are you going to do if you get home at 7 pm except annoy your wife? Just stay at work like a dutiful member of society.

Death by overwork is usually a man thing. It's all or nothing: if you're a woman, you can't possibly care about work after you get married. If you're a man, you can't be thinking about other things than work.

I didn't realize there were such extreme gender norms over there. I hope that changes!

There isn't a whole lot of hope. The big scandal this year was big Medical Universities systematically lowering the grades of female applicants because "it's a waste to train female doctors instead of men, since women will stop working after marriage anyway"
