where people die from overwork all the time and productivity is lower than countries with work life balance. Working yourself to death isn't productive, it turns out. It's also not fun, unsurprisingly.

It's a mix of traditions gone awry and social pressure. On one hand, caring about your company is equated to putting work before all other needs. On the other hand, you're not *expected* to care about anything else if you're a man.

You're not supposed to take any household responsibilities except bringing money home. What are you going to do if you get home at 7 pm except annoy your wife? Just stay at work like a dutiful member of society.
