It's a mix of traditions gone awry and social pressure. On one hand, caring about your company is equated to putting work before all other needs. On the other hand, you're not *expected* to care about anything else if you're a man.

You're not supposed to take any household responsibilities except bringing money home. What are you going to do if you get home at 7 pm except annoy your wife? Just stay at work like a dutiful member of society.
