To be clear, I mostly just disagree on the approach as opposed to the message when these things come up. That’s ok.

Agreed. This is the sort of thing a lot of us are deathly afraid of commenting on because quite frankly you don’t want to be perceived as “the enemy”. As a woman in CS, I think the word ally is appropriate to recognize people who are invested in understanding the struggles of minorities. That doesn’t mean those who don’t call themselves allies are not supportive & kind colleagues. I’d just think of them as apolitical on this.
