I’m able to read stuff like that slowly and carefully and try to get the core intuition out of it. But it’s a real chore and it’s certainly not comfortable. I was even a math minor and did well but played the game for grades more than solid understanding.
Hope for us all then :) I don't even have the basis for building on that to form understanding.
Something worth pointing out is most of these papers are not written to be understood. Between page and time limits, coupled with broken peer reviews, they're optimized to be as opaque as possible. That they're hard to understand says more about the community than self.
