1/ François is getting a lot of heat for this. Yes, it can be argued that he’s belittling the hard work of others. That's a less charitable interpretation. But I doubt he had ill intent. Is it his responsibility to make sure nobody’s feelings get hurt in his venting over a tool? https://twitter.com/fchollet/status/1205941768023236608 …

Although the tone didn't feel very infighting-y to me (mostly). It felt more like you gently but firmly telling your friend what might be misconstrued in his language!

Depends on where you’re looking. I saw somebody pretty prominent on the field retweet it and there was a bit of a pile on of random beefs. For example: “Him confessing to curse while programming, really explains a lot about his character.” Wat???

Matplotlib has a usability problem clearly.

I appreciate the spirit of you are saying, but that's not how social media work, and it has little to do with how ML is as a community. If you are willfully broadcasting your voice to 174k people, you should have a strategy in place for how to do so that effectively.

If you don't, either you are very naive, or very arrogant. From his replies, it seems obvious it's the latter, and I personally have very little sympathy for that.

Criticism of open source should almost always be seen as empathizing with a new user experiencing the tech. I love Haskell, Ubuntu, etc... my issues with them are me cringing at others having to work through shortcomings with less context. Matplotlib is no different
