I get that this is another "machine learning discovers that evolution is an optimization process" tweet, but I also feels like it misses the point
A 30 yo has "hundreds millions" years of experience and their learning abilities aren't half as impressive as a 4 yo.https://twitter.com/karpathy/status/1206064174129930240 …

Hmm... I take Andrej's tweet as a reminder that the "one shot learning" we talk about when trying to compare to biology in fact has a lot of learning behind it. It does seem that it's a bit overlooked (in ML). Then again I barely know what I'm talking about here, honestly.

Oh, I do get his point. It's very old news even if ML people seem to rediscover it every other month. It's just... his tweet is subtly wrong in enough ways to make me unsubtly annoyed

He's confusing species-level optimization with individual-level experience. He's making a distinction between "brain maturing" and "learning" where there's none. He's overlooking the fact that 4 yos *do* learn freakishly fast *compared to adults* and it's ok to be amazed by it...

I get it, evolution is awesome, I totally agree with that. But it's so sad that he chose an example that's just wrong to illustrate a thing that is true.
