"(Lidar) sidesteps the fundamental problems of visual recognition that is necessary for autonomy." It's hard to imagine how a cameras + extra nonhuman senses (lidar or anything else) wouldn't be better than cameras alone. Bad optics if they say 'cheaper and good enough' I guess.
That’s exactly what I think it is- spin on a decision that really revolves around trying to make this economically viable. That’s a laudable goal too but it isn’t going to be as well received.

The most charitable way I could restate Tesla's argument: spending 100% of research on cameras will yield faster progress than splitting their resources between different inputs, but I'd still bet the real reason is cost in the final product they hope to sell.
