I’ve seen a lot of people pile on Uncle Bob for this and for good reason- it’s at best a laughably naive view that tends to go hand in hand with the reckless “we’re a meritocracy!” mindset. But it’s not just him- this is a very commonly expressed belief.https://twitter.com/unclebobmartin/status/1200074140637642754 …

I'm sure there's no chilling effect in this respectful exchange of ideas.

Yeah that's really something that concerns me when I see stuff like this. Understandably, people like Bob seem to be viewed as the ones that have privilege and then should therefore be knocked down a peg. But the I don't think the resulting derision and posturing is helping.

It comes across as a mob swarming in and it just doesn't look good from the perspective of anybody not quite on the same page (even if they're sympathetic).

I completely agree. There is actually a sense in which his comments are a counterargument to racists in asking us to judge code as code and not identity. Racists are more than happy to judge on identity.

I'm not saying this is the full story, but on some level of resolution this is actually true (say reading a for loop). But it's alarming that malevolent intent is the first thing people read from the statement, rather than the last.
