I completely agree. There is actually a sense in which his comments are a counterargument to racists in asking us to judge code as code and not identity. Racists are more than happy to judge on identity.
At the very least it's the more benign form of ignorance (pretending things are equalized or a meritocracy when they're not). I get that this is still a problem but it's not the same as overt hate- so let's be a little more even handed about how we deal with this.
