I completely agree. There is actually a sense in which his comments are a counterargument to racists in asking us to judge code as code and not identity. Racists are more than happy to judge on identity.

I'm not saying this is the full story, but on some level of resolution this is actually true (say reading a for loop). But it's alarming that malevolent intent is the first thing people read from the statement, rather than the last.
