I'm sure there's no chilling effect in this respectful exchange of ideas.
Yeah that's really something that concerns me when I see stuff like this. Understandably, people like Bob seem to be viewed as the ones that have privilege and then should therefore be knocked down a peg. But the I don't think the resulting derision and posturing is helping.

It comes across as a mob swarming in and it just doesn't look good from the perspective of anybody not quite on the same page (even if they're sympathetic).

I completely agree. There is actually a sense in which his comments are a counterargument to racists in asking us to judge code as code and not identity. Racists are more than happy to judge on identity.
