I don't think I'd be doing anything in the time I'm not coding. "Spend time with your loved ones" sounds cool but I don't live with my family ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think I’d be tempted to say the same thing. But then I realize- oh wait...I just gradually stopped doing things I genuinely liked because they were “a waste of time”. I even stopped reading fiction because it wasn’t informing me lol. I know I’m not alone on that.

This tweet provoked a long think for me, thanks for sharing. I spent a lot of time with technology in my 20s and absolutely loved every minute of it. The crux of it for me is I got to create something that autonomously interacts with the world. 1/2

Other forms for creativity are passive: to be clear I've had the great privilege to be bittten by the music composition bug too so spent a lot of time with that too. Now I have two kids and they are far more rewarding, and far harder. 2/2

Thanks for sharing. This is an interesting discussion for a 29 yo coder. Don't you partially agree that you made a satisfying career because you put a lot of time and effort on what you do? Isn't life just a matter of choice, and we will never be fully satisfied?

Sure- all that work helped tremendously. For optimizing for certain things. Is it satisfying? Oddly not particularly- once you climb one hill you just find another to climb. You know- the hedonic treadmill, basically. Of course it’s easy to say that now.

And screen stuff dates so quickly. An actual physical thing you make can last so much longer and has associations with place and time in a different way. A balance of the two.

I was lucky to discover salsa dancing in my early 20s. But having kids had added yet another dimension to the be freaking efficient with your 8 hours of work a day.

Somethings that helped me were to set timers e.g. code for an hour then stop. If I stop after I solved a problem it could be a sleepless night
