You know.... now that you mention it I do like C# for beginners. It sounds crazy at first. But I actually made a scripting engine at (paid) work years ago for UI automation that (non engineer) QAs could make updates to, using C# scripts compiled on the fly. Worked out great.
We're still using the same setup ten years later with many QAs. Excel drives the data for the tests, which I also consider a great way to get people to program without necessarily feeling like they are :)
