What things do you think are a good one indicator/signal? Thinking on projects, you can always just copy-paste and glue together chunks of code from the internet, or just follow through someone else tutorial line by line,etc.

Technical: getting non-trivial code from them somehow that involves having to manage complexity as opposed to just solving a puzzle or brain teaser. The Rest: Interpersonal skills, openness to learning/being wrong, tenacity- all hard to assess but important.

In the research I've seen there's zero correlation between years of experience and speed and correctness of coding.

In my experience a 5 minute conversation about what someone is interested in beats any resume. The best person I ever interviewed had almost no relevant experience on their resume, but when you spoke to her it was clear shes 100 times better than almost anyone else we interviewed
