Their names were on the paper, getting credit. What were their names doing on there...? Vanity? That's bad, too. There's has to be at least a modicum of responsibility assumed here. Also, when I was being emailed about the awful revisions, several authors were on it.
So... I don't think it's crazy to assume that they were in on it too. Unless they totally didn't read those revisions either...after knowing the context of the pr disaster by that point. That's just stupid.

The mistake really was that they thought they could get away with it! Being sorry would translate to taking responsibility, and withdrawing submission. I hope someone in the faculty can guide them to the right path!
