Have you ever tested another transform besides color->b&w for the training set images? Still curious what your model would do with asciify, masking-out-faces, a cartoon-filter, or whatever else.
I've done super resolution (low res -> normal), defade (random contrast/lighting adjustments -> normal), and noise removal (poisson/gaussian augmented images -> normal). They all work! You could probably get your use cases to work reasonably well.
