Its wise and should be encouraged to employ ethical norms to guide your work and the design of your products. But I have to disagree with the habit of academics giving sermons on which ethics we should all believe in and who we should or shouldn't work for.

I have to disagree with your disagreement then. It’s called (moral) leadership and we need it now just like we’ve always needed it. He’s in the position to do so and quite frankly taking a stand like this is brave considering his audience.

I agree we need moral leadership - but only of a high enough caliber. If he says you shouldn't work on any military, stock-market, or advertising applications (throwing Geoff Hinton, Yann LeCun, and his own brother under the bus), that's not leadership, that's sanctimoniousness.

I don't think it matters to the message if his high profile colleagues happen to be doing the things that he's pointing out are problematic. In fact that's exactly what is needed. You can call it being sanctimonious. I'll call it having a backbone.

Yes it does matter. If his high profile colleagues (in fact not just them but huge swaths of the industry) seem to feel ok with what they do, that is evidence *against* the claim those activities are problematic. That's the problem with alienating large groups of people.

What you're referring to there is "social proof". That's not exactly the best way to evaluate whether or not a group is doing is okay (see....history).
