Something I'm really looking forward to is a #DeOldify-type option for all the B&W TV/movies I used to watch when young. Not as a replacement but a supplement. Imagine pressing "DeOldify" in @Netflix or your streaming platform of choice... e.g. Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes (1/4)pic.twitter.com/MZSXfC4TWP

I did #DeOldify on a clip from Sherlock Holmes, "The Woman in Green" It is 640x480 so it may perform better on the 720p version on http://archive.org  (movie is public domain, for some reason Universal didn't renew four of the films) but I can't do that now as on via hotspotpic.twitter.com/j2V5sGlIie

What is interesting is that there was a colorisation of these movies in 2006 (they had been PD since 1970s) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_Holmes_(1939_film_series)#Colour_versions_and_restoration … so you can compare the above #DeOldify version with the human version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2WcEr9q7WE … 26m47s - I'll #DeOldify 720p B&W later for comparison!

Yes. It’s been fascinating to see all these experiments. Which suggests a very speculative question. Has been any preliminary thinking about rendering paintings as photographs? I suppose there’s a much smaller corpus to work with.

Oh yes there's actually many variations on this idea. You can even do doodles: https://petapixel.com/2019/03/19/nvidias-ai-can-turn-doodles-into-landscape-photos/ … . There's many ways to potentially do it but I'd think CycleGAN would be a good start (where you'd train the network to go back and forth from painting to real photo).
