Have you actually taken modern photos and desaturated them to test the results side by side, because I see a problem with this, what spectrum to luminance model do you use, linear or one that matches the curves for a particular monochrome photographic emulsion, and they do vary.

There's no claim to accuracy on these renders. That's a much harder problem. The claim is artistically pleasing. Quite frankly, I'm too dense to get the rest of what you're asking.
