I guess I’m a bit different here. Great books around problem solving, learning, and dealing with the mind’s quirks effectively have stuck out to me as having the most impact in my life and work. Here’s the cream of the crop of the years (pic in next comment)https://twitter.com/hardmaru/status/1081527338079203328 …

I should mention books that are work and I can’t take a picture of: Pragmatic Programmer, Code Complete, Refactoring. All great books, and they’re really about how to use your mind effectively.

Is refactoring language specific or would it be helpful for Python? One of my goals this year is to improve my programming chops.

Not at all language specific! It's a very generalized concept. Definitely helpful for Python. The overarching goal is to make code readable and understandable.

#1 problem in code as far as I've seen is programmers writing themselves (or others) into a corner with incomprehensible code. That means bugs in the minds of the coders, and therefore bugs wind up in the code. Or progress just grinds to a halt.

That's what Refactoring addresses more than anything else.
