Not only is there ample opportunity, but I think the demand for engineers working on devops, Infra, front end etc supporting ML >>> demand for the folks building models. “Outsiders” are badly needed including more domain experts but also engineers from various disciplines.
Based on what I’ve seen, I really do think there’s ample opportunity for software engineers coming in from the outside (like me- a web dev) to make a significant impact in machine learning.
