Well, I can tell you why -I- avoid it: I don't hate myself :) . But seriously, Jeremy is right about the benefits- that it has a lot of good tooling around it and it's highly expressive. But there's a major downside to it which is it's a totally bonkers language.

I don't. At all. I very much like the ideal espoused by Python which is having one straightforward way to do things.
