A lot of folks, including Tyler, are saying that IGOR wasn’t a rap album. I basically agree, but it got me thinking- what makes something a rap album? What makes a sing a rap song? What are the criteria? What is the essence of a rap song?
I’m going to discuss this in my Philosophy and Hip Hop class and I would love to know folks thoughts on it.

The love below is not a rap album even though André is an emcee. The new danger has me torn because Mos does a lot of rapping on it but I would still put this as an alternative album. But then I also feel like we’re putting limitations on what a rap album can be.
I agree, I'm hesitant to put limitations on what rap can be and yet if there were not limitations than anything could be rap and the label would become meaningless. Thanks for your input on this and your examples. They are really helpful.
It's a tough call, and I think I usually fall back to delivery (not singing) & 16 bar verses as the key indicators. Beats vary & content/ lyrics vary, but can still easily be Rap.
16 bar verses are standard but they aren't required right?
I think genre bending is more common, but if the category is a RAP record, it needs to have a majority of rap. At least 75% for me. Rage Against The Machine (for example) is considered a Rock Band but they are SIGNIFICANTLY more 'RAP' than that Tyler album.

Rap albums needs to have at least 80% rapping on it. Like Lauryn’s debut isn’t a rap album either regardless of what she released prior to that album.
I think I agree with you about The Miseducation . . . 80% seems a bit a random though. Does that refer to the % of rapping in a song or the % of rapping songs on an album or both?
rap also includes melodies and harmonizing but for me when most of your material isn't rhyming words mostly singing or another form of expression. Even some of the beats may not be consider rap. Run Dmc caught flack for "King of Rock"
King of Rock (like Rock Box before it) had a very prevalent guitar riff, but it has all of the elements of a rap song.
