proud of all papers from my lab - but this one in particular! patch-seq on >1,300 neurons from mouse motor yields ephys & anatomy for >70 types. with and many others!

It is grad school interview season in North America. Amusing how esteemed social psychologists through all social psychology knowledge out of the window when approaching this topic. Despite interviews having no benefits for estimating students' future performance, many favor them

There have been a few stretches in my life where I played abstract strategy games (mostly go) in a club setting on a regular basis, and I think this taught me a valuable lesson about "cheap moves" that's relevant to practicing interdisciplinary research. (thread)

also relevant for any computational neuroscientist who has analysed the eigenspectrum of a synaptic weight matrix

genetics determines scaffolding (inputs and outputs), experience modifies particular synaptic weights, activity set-points keep the whole thing in balance. Easy!

some v good answers to this eg zebrafish (thanks). can I up the ante though, any examples from mammals? if not, what *do* we think is conserved across individuals? Cell types + connectivity, but only at a statistical level? Surely almost all synaptic weights are idiosyncratic

Read lots of papers on theory over the last few months. When writing up discussion of new paper, I thought it might be useful to put papers together from which I (as theory noob) learned most. Here's the doc, in case you're interested: Feedback welcome!

Does anyone know of data giving evidence for or against identifiable neurons in a vertebrate circuit? i.e. as in c elegans or crustacean STG where the 'same' neurons can be re-identified in different animals.

"With preprinting, publishing is a relatively trivial act...When most anything can be published, publication recedes as the key incentive. What takes its place? Evaluation. Journals have historically confounded publication with evaluation."

can’t wait until we all wear facial recognition-blocking masks and makeup and the cops switch to gait recognition and we all have to wear shoes with uneven soles to make every step we take unpredictable and ridiculous.

Me: Can you repair my glasses? Optician: Sure, but I have to inform you there is a chance that the frame will break when I try. Me: What do you estimate that chance to be? Optician: Well, it either breaks or it doesn't, so 50/50, right? Me: You got me there!

This looks like good news, as long as it isn’t replaced with something equally ridiculous. Maybe next we could have: - standardised application formats - shorter pre-proposals - grants designated fundable allocated ££ on basis of lottery instead of score I live in hope .....
