Instead of putting down students who want to engage critically with your work, or who maybe want to be able to open up a line of communication with you, consider being less self-important, calm your superiority complex down, and consider checking yourself. 2/

I absolutely believe that academics - tutors & lecturers - with this kind of attitude towards people asking for help, are the kind of tutors & lecturers we need to put out to graze now. We need to encourage students of all levels to engage & communicate - we need a community. 3/

Sorry for the rant, I just think it's important that we encourage good practice and discuss bad practice where we see it. End of thread 4/4.

If someone anyone asked me for something I'd published they'd get flooded with freebies! There is nothing intuitive or easy about accessing publications

I don’t even want to know what kind of asshat prompted this, but I feel strongly about it, and as a *grad student* who was incredibly anxious abt contacting scholars for things I can imagine the effects this asshattery would have on a developing scholar. Just UGH

Completely agree. I've been ignored a number of times on issues like this, and then can't help but feel incredibly paranoid that I'm overstepping.

Right?! There aren’t guidelines about etiquette and procedure when you’re doing an essay, or even just research for your own projects. Sometimes I feel like people have either been lucky enough to never be rejected, or have forgotten what that feels like as an ECR.

I have been SO grateful to the handful of academics I've emailed re: unpublished work or stuff I couldn't access who've responded with enthusiasm and happily sent me more than what I asked for, especially now that I'm researching independently with limited library access.

It’s the way things should be. To be honest I’m so overwhelmed with how many people have engaged with this thread that I might make a list of people who encourage conversation/reaching out? And another one for ‘people to avoid’.
