The friend zone is a misnomer. Anyone who expects romantic involvement in exchange for their kindness, or views the simple return of equivalent kindness as a deficient result, is definitely not a friend.

There can't be romantic vibes if one person is not interested in romance. Person A having a crush on Person B doesn't obligate Person B to treat them differently.

It sounds like you think friendzoning is (or should be) an action that people do to friends they’re not interested in. It isn’t. People decide they’ve been friend zoned. It’s a sulky self-pitying accusation. In the same camp as “we nice guys finish last”.

No. The sine qua non of "friend zone" is "Let's just be friends". It happens when a guy thinks he's romantically pursuing a woman, but she doesn't, then he finally calls the question in frustration. What she's usually saying, though, is "Please don't murder me."
