There was zero accountability or even healthy skepticism until Mueller commented. Nor was there much concern that BuzzFeed was employing a serial fabulist as a reporter. Even now your concern is how people will use it against you, not how the media screwed up and how to prevent.
Those trying to tar all media today aren’t interested in improving journalism but protecting themselves. There’s a lot more accountability in media these days than in our politics. We know we live in a glass house, we hope the folks we cover are as self aware.

CNN literally posted an old story about the one author’s checkered past directly below the story and linked to it within the story itself. They weren’t even remotely misleading... it said exactly what it was, an unconfirmed report.

The media had one of those 4 hour Viagra erections yesterday. It was everything you wanted, but didn't check.Then Mueller showed up and just like that, limb biscuit. Every media outlet sank in that low tide last night. And its going to be tough to believe anyone going forward

The problem is that you (media) refuse to reflect on yourselves, you paint yourselves as exceptional and the conscience of society. You presume society cannot effectively think for itself. In other words you no longer report, you now feel the need to shape.

It’s not a presumption when over 40% of the voting population fell for “Mexico will pay for the wall” and believes Trump represents the Christian ideals they want for the country. If anything, Trump being elected is proof that too much of US society can’t think for itself.

At the end of the day your a journalist, and back in the day if you leaked a story that was false you lost your job and credibility, now You get your own show. Shits crazy how the media went from news to click bait in the last 15 years. All for a buck
