  1. Dunno what we can do, but we need to work against the clickbait-and-reflexive-sharing culture. Herpes B sounds absolutely awful.

On a train in Italy. A teenage Chinese boy boards the train. A woman comments loudly: “There you go, we are all going to be infected.” He replies in perfect Italian with a Roman inflection: “Ma’am, in my whole life I’ve seen China only on google maps.” Applauses.

Smoke from 1. Circumnavigated the globe 2. Reached heights well into the stratosphere 3. Pumped more carbon monoxide into the atmosphere than 🛰️MLS has ever observed for an event outside of the tropics

This is written up as diplomatically as possible, under the circumstances.

Sorry for all the texting screenshots, but here’s one from my mom today that melted my heartsicle. ❤️😭 The image is my grandfather/taata with one of his sled dogs after a race. I love how she still calls him daddy tho she is in her 70s.

Image of text message sent by my mom. First message is a photo of her father in 1974 with his sled dog wearing a racing pennant. The image is captioned “Alfred Wells 1974 champion.” Then there is another text where she says, “My daddy was a champion.”

Since winter solstice it's been persistently cold over mainland Alaska. At Fairbanks, the lowest 31-day average temperature so far has been -20.9F (-29.4C), the lowest since Dec 2012. Before the mid-80s this level of sustained cold was common.

The very lovely Frontier. Rob's dogs sailed through the vet check; race starts a week from today.

  8. There are many ways at looking at data, and we should be creative. Another one is this: Even though Trump won the district where I live with something like 78%, a random person I meet there is much more unlikely to have voted for Trump than likely, possibly by a lot.

One time the husband absentmindedly (and rhetorically) murmured, “how do you measure a year...” So of course I took a deep breath and busted out with. “FIVE HUNDRED TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND SIX HUNDRED MINUTES...” He is not a fan of musicals.

The unspoken point of my Davos piece is the historical lesson that, when forced to choose between socialism and fascism, the elites — no matter how cosmopolitan their personal instincts may be — will always pick the latter.

The purpose of "race science" (and other genetic IQ stuff) is to provide an alibi for inequality and injustice because there's then an "explanation" that doesn't invoke discrimination, structural disadvantage etc 1/5

One of our Lead Meteorologists, Ryan, is visiting the Finnish Meteorological Institute in Helsinki, Finland this week. Ryan is learning about Finland's forecasting operations to bring some of their best practices to Alaska, and also presenting about NWS operations in AK!

The impending return to the deep freezer is a good example of how at high latitudes in mid-winter there's no need to bring in cold air from anywhere: we're making it right here in Alaska and the Yukon. GIF courtesy .

Chatted with a Sanders supporter today and they said as a queer person, I should support Sanders over Warren. I asked why, and he responded by saying that Bernie has the best policies. So I decided to do a direct comparison of Warren and Sanders’ proposals. A thread 1/9

The first person to be counted in the 2020 Census is a Toksook Bay elder who only speaks Yup'ik and "has concerns about climate change and what it might do to future generations of subsistence hunters and fishers in the community".

My story on ‘Molly of Denali’ was picked up by The Associated Press. It is the first PBS Kids cartoon to feature an Alaska Native lead. It was created by Native creatives... and I had the privilege to tell this story as a Native journalist. Wow. Chills.

Two cities this obscenely wealthy this distance apart should be served by an HSR departure every 15-20 minutes. The fact that flights are still viable along this corridor is a massive indictment of this country's infrastructure priorities.

This is such an important point. We're trying to create sustainable societies not because we'll die otherwise, but because we'll have to live* in an objectively worse world. Conservation is a selfish goal. *Also, lots of people will die. Just probably not you.
