IMO, formal academic titles should be used in the HR files and very few other places, first names are what you call people, and, if necessary, "Professor" refers to anyone who teaches a class. Formality retards the building of relationships, which are essential to learning.

I worked as staff at the library for about a decade then became library faculty. I hope I never see myself above the staff and I wish all departments had a way for professors to work as staff first.
