more: - tension of living with immigrant parents with language barrier, + conflicting narratives at home vs in school/society - aa main characters with complex inner lives & significant character development - navigating your own desired balance of individualism vs collectivism
less: - showing aa charaters within american "frame", proving that we are X (wealthy, successful, able to assimilate) enough - portrayal as weird/not to be taken seriously - snapping straight into depiction of exotic homeland when trying to show depth of character/complexity
