it is striking to see the difference in representation of Asian men in American vs Chinese media, the guys are so fucking hot in Chinese tv shows, Wong kar wai films etc, vs ‘weird funny short man’ roles, it makes you think what image we are fed as Asian American women

Asian men has occasionally been castes as action lead but almost never as romantic lead though. Even Henry Golding in crazy rich Asians was obviously (half) white and unrelatable for most Asian men

I rarely watch romance movies so I'm not well versed in that genre. When I think about it there's not many famous Asian American directors that I'm aware of. I wonder if there was more famous Asian directors in Hollywood if they would cast more Asians in lead positions.

Personally, I think there's a lot of potential in a sub-genre of "American Westerns", that focuses on the experience of early Asian American Immigration to California during the 1800's. There must be many amazing stories about AAPI during that period. Could be called "Easterns".

Hmm.. will the timetable for quality AM rep in blockbusters will be dictated by Hollywood going forward? Talented Asians should not be under the delusion that 40%+ of the world pop w/growing purchasing power is going to let others dictate how they're seen. Best get to creating :)
