seeking to understand the mechanics of trust- how is it broken down, how do people understand it?

For me, trust is a concept that doesn't really exist in my life and I'm pretty used to that by now, but it's weird when for most people it's like a core thing in life...
does something else take its place? Or, what do you call it when you have to rely on other (reliable or unreliable) people?

When I rely on people, that doesn't involve trust as I know it very often falls through (which is unfortunate when it comes to e.g. doctors and people taking care of me etc, but that's how it is).
