If your leaky old NYC walkup gets new rugs and reliable heating, does that count as '(winter) draft deferral'?

Isn't that what a landlord is supposed to do anyway? Not a great deal for the podiatrist, really.

I agree. The daughters probably don't really know the full story. He could have been "forced" to do it...like an offer he couldn't refuse or have been taken care of in other ways (free rent, utilities, or something).

Great digging for this story. During Viet Nam, if you had $$, daddy could buy you a diagnosis, while poor folks (mostly black) had to serve & die. I can still remember the vets hanging outside
@DeptVetAffairs in their wheelchairs with missing limbs when I was a kid. Made me sad -
I have similar memories of visiting the VA just outside Chicago when my Grandfather had appointments. As a young kid the images of their faces haunted me more than the missing limbs. Their spirits were broken, I could see it in their eyes.

So... his job? That's literally his only responsibility as landlord

So a proper Tennant/owner relationship. Okay, god damn I need to be rich. It looks great, no responsibility, little accountability, you're expected to do the bare minimum
